Overall first impressions when opening the box, glad to see it’s packaged well, and hasn’t been damaged in transportation. Pulling it out and taking a look around it looks better in person than it does in the pictures. The cone is very stiff which is to be expected with a new sub. Be sure to take out the Silica gel that’s stuffed between the spider and cone. Onto testing each sub, I bought the dual 4 ohm versions of these subs (4 in total) and every sub read from about 2.5-2.9 ohms, no where close to the advertised 4 ohms. Otherwise, the only two other things is the look of the back side of a paper cone, which isn’t uniformed, but to be expected with a paper cone, and lastly is the extra glue that is left over within the mounting hole locations. So far so good on sound quality, haven’t had much time to listen to them yet but overall good product for the price.
My wife wanted a little “bump” in her car. I orders this after hearing of skar for a long time but not ever trying it. I have 2 old kicker Comp 12s in a Sealed box in my Honda and this rivals them easy. Very impressed and I may do 4 in my truck. I used skar recommended box only I used 3/4 birch.
Prefacing my review by noting that unlike most i am a newbie in the world of sound system upgrade in cars.
I have watched many videos and read many blogs. I have also made many mistakes in choice of hardware matching mostly because of cost and space limitation. Had 12" then 10" subs in the trunk of my BMW i3 (maybe 2.2 cubic ft of total space). Ironically the 8"skar was the most powerful one (wattage) and the heaviest. I had a hard time installing it the way I wanted in the skar prefab box, I will be 3 staring that one. Wish they had included with the sub or the box a drilling template (again novice here).
Once properly installed the 8" sub sounded quite amazing, better than a low powered 10" and even 12" on most songs. You can tell it moves more air in the box. But being an 8" you can tell the interaction with the air on the outside of the box is less dramatic than with the 12".
All that being said this Skar sub/box match up is perfect for my trunk which happens to rest on top on the car's electric motor and petrol range extender generator. So I have some trunk space left and can push the setup "easily" to folded rear chairs if I need to access the "engine bay" underneath.
Its been years since I last bought any type of car audio equipment. My last purchase was a 15" Kicker CVR. But this little 8" is impressive. It's paired with Skar audios RP-800.1D and installed in their prefabricated enclosure. I wasn't really sure how it would perform, and honestly went off the reviews from here. Glad I did and I'm satisfied with my purchase. It's suits my needs perfectly for my daily driver project car. I would say it sounds like I actually have a larger sub but with less weight and more space in the trunk!
